Calzone is a calorie deficit calculator and food journal for iPhone, made by Brogan LLC (“Brogan”, “we” or “us”). It used to be called Fuel. This policy explains what Calzone does with your information. The short version: Calzone keeps your profile, goals and food journal with your account, so it can work out your calorie target and sync your journal. It sends usage statistics and crash reports so we can fix and improve it. There's no advertising, and we don't sell your information.
Your account
You need an account to use Calzone. You can sign in with Apple, with Google, or with an email address and password. Sign-in runs on Firebase Authentication, a Google service, which keeps your email address and handles your password, so we never see your password.
- Sign in with Apple: Calzone asks Apple only for your email address, and Apple lets you hide it behind a private relay address.
- Sign in with Google: Google handles the sign-in under its own privacy policy, and Firebase also keeps the name and profile picture on your Google Account.
- Email and password: if you forget your password, Firebase sends the reset email.
What Calzone keeps with your account
To work out your calorie target and keep your journal on every iPhone you sign in on, Calzone stores these in Cloud Firestore, a database Google runs for us:
- Your profile: the name you give, your date of birth, sex, height, weight and activity level.
- Your goals: your weight goal, how Calzone works out your daily energy (from your profile, from Apple Health, or a number you enter), and any nutrient goals you set.
- Your food journal: each entry's food, portion, calories and nutrients, and the meal and day it's in. Each day also keeps the profile details and energy figures its calorie target was worked out from.
- Your foods and recipes: the foods you add, including any barcode, the foods you log from the food database, and the recipes you build.
Only you can see this in the app. Brogan looks at it only when we need to, such as to help you when you ask or to fix a problem, or when the law requires it. Calzone also keeps a copy on your iPhone so it works when you're offline.
Apple Health
If you have Calzone Plus and choose Apple Health for your daily energy, Calzone asks to read two things from Apple Health: your active energy and your resting energy. It uses them to work out your daily calorie target, and saves each day's figures in your journal: that day's active energy, and your average resting energy over the week before.
Calzone never writes to Apple Health and doesn't read anything else from it. Health data is never sent to analytics, used for advertising or sold. You can turn off Calzone's access in Settings › Privacy & Security › Health.
Scanning barcodes and labels
Calzone uses your iPhone's camera to scan barcodes and Nutrition Facts panels, and reads them on your iPhone. Camera images are never saved or sent anywhere. Only a barcode's number may leave your iPhone, to look the food up, and the nutrition facts Calzone reads from a label are kept only if you save the food.
Looking up food
When you search for a food, or scan a barcode that isn't among your own foods, Calzone sends the search text or the barcode number from your iPhone to USDA FoodData Central, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's food database. The request carries no name, email address or account details, though, like any request, it includes your IP address.
What Calzone sends, and where
- Your account and journal, to Google Firebase, as described above. See Firebase's privacy information and Google's privacy policy.
- Usage statistics, through Google Analytics for Firebase. Calzone records events such as when the app is first opened, how long it's used, and the steps of signing up and signing in (for example, whether you chose Apple, Google or email), so we can tell what's working. Each installation gets a random app instance identifier, and Google works out your approximate country or region from your IP address. These statistics aren't linked to your account. Calzone never asks to track you, so it can't use your device's advertising identifier, and we don't use these statistics for advertising.
- Crash reports, through Firebase Crashlytics. When Calzone crashes or runs into an error, it sends a report of what the app was doing, with your device model, system version and a random installation identifier, so we can find and fix the problem.
- Subscription status, through RevenueCat. See Calzone Plus below.
- Food searches and barcodes, to USDA FoodData Central, as described above.
- Apple, for Sign in with Apple and App Store purchases. Apple Health data stays on your iPhone apart from the daily figures described above.
Like any online service, these providers also receive technical information when the app connects to them, such as your IP address.
Calzone Plus
Apple handles purchases of Calzone Plus and bills them to your Apple Account. RevenueCat receives your App Store receipt and your Calzone account's user ID, so that Calzone Plus goes with your account, and tells Calzone whether you have it. Neither we nor RevenueCat receive your Apple Account details or your payment details. See RevenueCat's privacy policy.
If you email us
If you write to us for help, we get your email address and whatever you send, such as a screenshot. We use them only to answer you, and we don't add you to any mailing list.
Children
Calzone isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them.
Sharing and selling
We don't sell your information, and we don't share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. Calzone has no ads. We share information only with the service providers above, so they can do their jobs for us, or when the law requires it.
Deleting your information
To delete your account, open Settings in Calzone, tap Account, then Delete Account. That deletes your account and, right after it, everything Calzone stores with it: your profile, goals, energy settings, journal (including the daily Apple Health energy figures), foods and recipes. It can't be undone. Deleting Calzone from your iPhone removes the copy kept on it.
Deleting your account doesn't cancel Calzone Plus, so cancel it in your iPhone's subscription settings too. Apple keeps its own purchase records, and RevenueCat keeps your purchase and subscription history under a random ID, with no name or email address. To have that deleted too, email us before you delete your account, or afterwards send us the Order ID from Apple's receipt email.
Apple Health isn't changed, because Calzone only reads it. If you signed in with Apple or Google, you can also remove Calzone's access in your Apple Account or Google Account settings.
Usage statistics and crash reports aren't linked to your account. They're kept for the period set in each provider's retention settings, and crash reports for about 90 days. Our server logs can keep a deleted account's ID for up to 30 days.
If you've emailed us and want that email deleted, ask us at the address below.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what information we hold about you, to get a copy of it, and to have it corrected or deleted. Email us and we'll reply within 30 days. We won't treat you differently for asking.
This policy and Brogan's
Brogan's privacy policy covers all of our apps and the brogan.io website, and explains your rights in more detail, including for California and for the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland. This page is the more specific policy for Calzone. If the two ever say different things about Calzone, this page applies.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date. If a change materially affects how Calzone handles your information, we'll post it here before it takes effect and, where we can, tell you in the app.
